West Coast Garden’s story begins with a tale of hard work and the Valley’s best plants for your home & garden. In 1982 glass greenhouses on 24 acres of high-sunshine land were taken under new management, its owners committed to using decades of floral experience to grow top-quality bedding & tropical plants for the Canadian & US wholesale markets. In 1993 a small ‘grower-direct’ retail outlet was opened to the public offering a selection of annuals & hanging baskets… & West Coast Gardens was born. From 1993 thru the spring of 2007, the store operated under the management of Glenda Harskamp, growing slowly from the offerings of annual bedding, tropicals & hanging baskets, to a well-rounded selection of perennials, trees, shrubs & hard goods. In 2006, Steve Whysall took notice of the little grower-direct garden center in South Surrey, & featured the baskets that had become West Coast’s specialty in the years since it’s inception. Again, in 2008, the store was featured in the Vancouver Sun for the cutting edge, head-turning containers being created, displayed, & sold at West Coast Gardens. Having had the horticultural ‘coming of age’ so to speak with the two time recognition of the Lower Mainland area’s gardening columnist, a milestone had been reached. Glenda stepped down as store manager & West Coast Gardens continued it’s evolution & came under the direction of Jason VanderMey in the fall of 2007.
Since taking over the management of the Garden Center, Jason has continued the tradition of excellence in product & customer service. The fresh, young perspective has revived the store in many ways, & will for the years to come!
