Our History

Founded on the site of a 50 year old nursery, our home + garden lifestyle store is deeply rooted in Canadian pride and opportunity.

West Coast Gardens has a dynamic history, beginning when the VanderMey family emigrated from Rijsenburg in the late 40's, after WWII, and settled in the Queensborough area, Tom VanderMey purchased land and began growing crops, particularly chrysanthemums and tulips. After several years of learning and cultivating his craft, the VanderMey family began to focus their growing expertise on annuals, while also importing tropicals, Poinsettias and flowering bulbs.

In 1981 Tom’s son and daughter-in-law, John and Joyce VanderMey, bought the current West Coast Gardens location in South Surrey. John and Joyce lived on the property and raised their family, while growing plant material and selling their product wholesale to various garden centres, grocery store chains and florists, shipping from White Rock to Winnipeg. As demand grew over the years, the need for a new greenhouse was fulfilled in 1986, with a new propagation facility added in 1988

In the mid 90's the VanderMey family fulfilled the next evolution of the West Coast Gardens business by opening up their retail store to service not only South Surrey and White Rock, but also much of the Lower Mainland and Vancouver market. With all of the knowledge, greenhouse space and growing facilities West Coast Gardens quickly became a garden destination for Lower Mainland shoppers.

With the dawn of the new millennium and further development of the vision for West Coast Gardens, John and Joyce’s son, Jason, stepped in to roll up his sleeves and carry out the ambition.

The VanderMey family are a team of seasoned growers, who literally, live and breath everything garden related. They are always looking for innovative new growing techniques and honing their science to be ahead of the industry with new plant products to offer all customers whether wholesale or retail.
