Seasoning Your Patio for Autumn

We’re pretty lucky here on the west coast, with our mild Autumns that give us time to unwind on our patios and decks without having to pull out the parkas quite yet. Sometimes a light blanket and a flannel will do for a late afternoon or evening watching the leaves change colour.

Now that the season has shifted, why not take advantage of the rustic colours and styles to create a cozy autumn atmosphere on your patio? Let’s talk about fall outdoor decor!

Keeping it Cozy & Comfy

No one wants to sit outdoors if they’re cold or uncomfortable. Your first order of business should be some comfy outdoor pillows and seating, as well as a throw blanket or two. Bird motifs are catching this season, as well as the rustic green colour we’re seeing paired with coppers and browns. These match beautifully with the natural rustic tones of your outdoors. Keep your throws inside during the night, to avoid them getting damp or mildew, as well a bonus benefit of having a warm and cozy blanket when you need one!

Large weaves, natural fibres and soft tones are all popular this year and give you lots to choose from that will match the rest of your decor. For your feet, try an outdoor carpet to soften the patio deck. Easy to clean and made for outdoor weather, a carpet may need the occasional sweeping once the leaves start falling in earnest.

Lighting The Way

The days get shorter and the sun sets sooner. No need to rush inside though, if you have some patio lighting. Black metal, rustic wood or distressed looking lanterns can add illumination and style to your outdoor setting. Battery powered candles (be sure to keep them undercover and dry) or outdoor solar lights fit into these decorative lanterns and will cast an atmospheric glow throughout the evening.

Brass or copper candleholders are another way to light up your space with fall tones. Or, if you are looking for warmth and light together, consider adding a firepit to your yard. Freestanding firepits can be made from wrought iron and safely used on a cement or stone patio area. Not to mention the obvious marshmallow advantage!

Little Touches

For your autumn hideaway, a few touches of charm can go a long way. Natural branch nests, bird accents and autumn wreaths will create a lived in space that also feels at-one with the outdoors. Dried grape-vine or stick wreaths can be hung as-is or with some embellishments from your garden such as dried hydrangea blooms, leaves or pinecones. A rustic rough weave basket is a nice addition and can hold treasures you find in your yard as well.

Don’t Forget the Plants!

Just because the summer is over, doesn’t mean you have to surrender your container gardens and pots on the patio! Many plants thrive in the autumn, right into the winter months. Pansy baskets can be hung around your space, or used as standing displays, paired with moss, fall foliage and rustic pots.

Chrysanthemums are in full bloom with a variety of fall shades to choose from and we always love the versatility of grasses which add height, volume and autumn textures to any location. For some ideas of Autumn perennials read our blog post.
